Privacy Fencing

Create a secluded sanctuary. Solid, secure fencing designed specifically to shield your garden from overlooking neighbors and public pathways.

Privacy-Focused Design

In densely populated residential areas, your garden should be a place where you can relax without feeling overlooked. Privacy fencing focuses entirely on creating a visual and physical barrier.

Unlike open-slat or low-level fences, our privacy solutions utilize solid, gap-free construction techniques. We build substantial boundaries that effectively block sightlines, dampen street noise, and reduce wind exposure, turning your outdoor space into a true extension of your home's private living area.

Suitable Garden Areas & Layouts

Not every part of a boundary requires maximum privacy. We often consult with clients on strategic placement to optimize the garden layout:

  • Patio and Seating Zones: Installing taller, solid fencing directly adjacent to entertaining areas to ensure immediate privacy.
  • Shared Side Boundaries: Creating a substantial division between closely built residential properties.
  • Street-Facing Borders: Shielding the garden from pedestrians and passing traffic.

Fence Height & Neighbor Relationships

When planning privacy fencing, height is a crucial consideration. While taller fences offer maximum seclusion, they must comply with local residential height regulations. We also carefully consider how a taller, solid fence might cast shade. Discussing plans openly with neighbors is often a positive step before installing a significant boundary structure.

Installation Planning for Solid Fencing

A solid privacy fence essentially acts as a sail. Because wind cannot pass through it, the structural framework must be incredibly robust to prevent damage during storms.

During our installation planning, we prioritize foundation strength. We excavate deeper post holes, use thicker, heavy-duty posts (either treated timber or reinforced concrete), and employ secure rail systems to brace the solid panels or overlapping boards firmly against extreme weather conditions.

Example Application

A family living in a semi-detached property found their new garden patio was entirely visible from the public footpath running alongside their house. They wanted to use the space for summer dining but felt uncomfortably exposed.

We designed a solid closeboard privacy fence running the length of the exposed boundary. To counter the significant wind exposure in that corridor, we utilized heavy concrete posts set deeply into the ground, slotted with thick timber featheredge panels. The new boundary completely blocked the view from the path, significantly muffled passing foot traffic noise, and created a secure, private dining area the family could finally enjoy in peace.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a solid privacy fence withstand strong winds?

Yes, but only if installed correctly. We specifically over-engineer the post foundations for solid fences, anchoring them deeply with high-strength concrete to prevent them from catching the wind and leaning.

What is the best style for maximum privacy?

Closeboard (featheredge) or solid tongue-and-groove panels offer the best privacy, as they are constructed without gaps, completely blocking sightlines.

Can I add a privacy fence on top of an existing wall?

In many cases, yes. We can install secure timber screening or trellis panels on top of existing sturdy boundary walls to increase height and privacy.

Will a tall fence make my garden too dark?

It can cast a shadow depending on the orientation of your garden (North/South facing). We can advise on placement, or suggest adding a semi-open trellis to the top foot of the fence to allow light in while maintaining eye-level privacy.
